Like all the Nupla hammers I've purchased (five or six?), the construction on this hammer is top notch: the faces are machined evenly and ever-so-slightly rounded for better striking contact. The shaft is heavy-duty fibreglas (durable and shock-absorbing). The fibreglas is so strong that the shaft can be narrow for better flex and shock-absorption, but the narrow shaft up by the head makes it uncomfortable to "choke up" on the handle for fine control. For me a hammer this heavy will not be doing any delicate work, so that is not a problem. I'm very happy I paid the few extra bucks for the SG Grip handle with the big ridges. The ridges are slightly rounded, and have a little "give" when you grip it, so it is easy to hold onto. The shape and grip of the handle make this little beast of a hammer easy to control, so I find myself aiming naturally with my hand, instead of having to try a few whacks to see how far off my perception is. In five to ten years. the slip-resistant plastic of my other Nupla SG Grip handles has not become sticky or gooey, so I'm sure this will last. While a heavy hammer is still just a hammer, this is easier to use and less dangerous than any cheapy hand sledge.
