Engineer TG-01 Grinder Review

I bought this grinder because I am setting up a small woodworking shop in a spare storage room in my apartment. And I do mean small, as in about 6'x5'. So I need everything to be small and relatively noise free. So I've decided to go with human powered tools exclusively. The reason that I'm mentioning all this is because commitment to human power is the only reason I would recommend this tool to somebody. Don't misunderstand, I gave the thing 4 stars as it works fine, but for the quality versus the price, you can buy a mini electric bench grinder for less money. So I would only recommend this to someone who wants to do traditional hand work and doesn't want to spend the time searching Ebay for a decent used crank grinder. That having been said, onto the review. Over all, I am pleased with this tool. When I said it seemed over priced, it just doesn't look like a $50-plus tool. I think $20-$30 would be more reasonable. The first task I used it for was to sharpen my 1/2" bench chisel, which was quite dull. The first thing I noticed was that as soon as I touched the chisel to the stone, it stopped spinning. I took the cover plate off and noticed the shaft wasn't set all the way into the gear. A few taps with a hammer solved the problem. After that, it ran very smooth. I had no trouble running my chisels, gouges, even my plane irons across the wheel and it put a fine edge on all of them (after some tuning with a wet stone). Over all, after I had it properly set up I was very pleased with it's performance. But again, I would only recommend this if you WANT a hand powered grinder, as there are plenty of electric models out there that don't take up much space and would work much better.
