I own several fix bladed knives. A 119 Buck, a Puma, A Shrade 1420T Old Timer, a Kershaw 1011, a Megtech, a couple of Buck Folders, a Kershaw folder with a lock liner..Also a few other knives of various types. I can safely say,I know knives. When I first saw the Roughneck I wanted one. That was several years ago.. Back then the price was much higher than what I paid today. I waited and watched until the price was right and bought one....lets compare the Kersahw 1010 with some of my other knives. The Buck 119 and the Roughneck both have a good steel blades, both are good knives..The Buck has a hard smooth handle which could become slick if wet with water or blood and it could slip cutting your hand while the Roughneck has soft rubber easy to hold onto..The Puma is a highly rated knife with Stag horn grips and they too may become slick when wet.. The Kershaw comes with a good type of Stainless blade and soft rubber grips which I have tested wet and I was able to hold onto the knife easily...I would put the Roughneck up against my Buck 119 for quality but the Buck looks like what we expect a hunting knife to look like. Some people are put off the Roughneck due to the looks. In fact, I like the Kershaw better because of the soft rubber grip not in spite of it.. As an experienced blood and guts man I can assure the soft rubber handle is what sold me on this knife...I also own a Kershaw 1011 which is a skinning knife with the same handle as the Roughneck 1010. Both are very good knives. The Old Timer Shrade 1420T also has a soft rubber handle making it good in the kitchen due to the blade being only about 4 inches long. Another good feature about the Kershaw Roughneck 1010 IS,,,it has a portion of it's spine (back of the blade) serrated..I believe serrated blades cut rope better than a smooth blade. Since I have a sail boat and could become entangled in lines and drown without a good knife, I like the being able to flip the blade over and cut ropes easily on the back side of the smooth edge...This knife came out of the box shaving sharp..This is NOT a kids toy.. It's a Real Mans Knife.. Don't let the up town folks laugh about the strange looking handle.. This knife has Good Steel and a Good handle that is WHY I bought it.. The sheath is made in the USA and its real leather unlike the nylon sheath I got with another name brand knife which cost MORE.
Sold for 34 bucks and shipped free the Kershaw 1010 is a bargain. It will make a good primary carry knife or a back up knife if you prefer another knife as your primary. If I didn't already own many knives I would buy two at this price because I like carrying two knives when I go into the wild...If it comes to a life or death situation that back up knife is worth it's weight in gold no matter what you paid.
Here we have wild hogs, gators, bears, cougars, coyotes, bob cats, and wolves..In most State Parks you can carry a knife when you can't carry a fire arm..It's your life and you only get one..To protect mine, I carry my knife even when I carry a gun. I recommend you buy one,,, and,,,,if,, you don't have another good knife for a primary, buy two. As a gift this should make any out doors man proud. I've told my kids you can always give Daddy a knife as a gift any time.. Good knives become part of a mans soul...You life may depend upon your knife one day.. Keep it sharp, keep it clean, never abuse it. NEVER throw it at a tree or play stupid games with it, it's not a throwing knife, nor a toy.. Treat it like a lady at all times and when the time comes she will be there to put a smile on your face. Caution, this is NOT a toy. It's very sharp.. Make sure you can legally own one before you place an order. Keep out of the hands of children or the mentally handicapped. This knife can save a life or take a life...Use caution at all times....
