Nupla HD-3SG Classic Hand Drilling Hammer, SG Grip, 10" Long Handle Review

Like all the Nupla hammers I've purchased (five or six?), the construction on this hammer is top notch: the faces are machined evenly and ever-so-slightly rounded for better striking contact. The shaft is heavy-duty fibreglas (durable and shock-absorbing). The fibreglas is so strong that the shaft can be narrow for better flex and shock-absorption, but the narrow shaft up by the head makes it uncomfortable to "choke up" on the handle for fine control. For me a hammer this heavy will not be doing any delicate work, so that is not a problem. I'm very happy I paid the few extra bucks for the SG Grip handle with the big ridges. The ridges are slightly rounded, and have a little "give" when you grip it, so it is easy to hold onto. The shape and grip of the handle make this little beast of a hammer easy to control, so I find myself aiming naturally with my hand, instead of having to try a few whacks to see how far off my perception is. In five to ten years. the slip-resistant plastic of my other Nupla SG Grip handles has not become sticky or gooey, so I'm sure this will last. While a heavy hammer is still just a hammer, this is easier to use and less dangerous than any cheapy hand sledge.

This is good for measuring something like 2 to 15 PSI, or roughly eyeballing 15 to 30 PSI.

Two caveats you need to know:

This is not a 0-100 PSI gauge as the product picture (at least as of Feb/08/2012) would make you believe, it's 0-30 PSI. You can confirm this by visiting manufacturer's web page (Hobart Welders, [..]) and search for the product code 770127. Also see my picture. This is not the fault of the product and I'm not subtracting any stars.

2.
Only 1-15 PSI range has tick marks 1 PSI apart. Between 15 and 30 PSI there's no tick mark at all (again see my picture). I'm fine with this as the only thing for which I need a 1 PSI resolution is my home built propane burner which normally operates at about 10 PSI. Nevertheless it would be nicer if this has tick marks for the entire range. One star subtracted.

Colt Knives 57 Guardian Tanto Point Fixed Blade Knife Review

I am usually skeptical of inexpensive knives with Tanto points because they tent to break at the tip [usually due to being ground down to thin or the steel is not of a good enough quality].

I am very impressed with this knife. It takes the use well in rough conditions. It makes for a great backup knife for camping, survival, or military uses. I like the way it fits into the sheath and it comes out easily enough when needed. I would not use this as a primary knife in extreme conditions [survival or military]unless there was simply no other option. However, It is great for cutting rope or shaping wood items for camping or survival needs [as a last resort, when a larger knife is not available].

The other good feature about this knife is that the blade is fairly straight and not curved like some Tanto knives are. This allows this knife to be a good boot knife for easy one-handed drawing from the sheath...

This hammer is super nice, if you can get over the fiberglass handle, for real blacksmithing work. You should be prepared to dress the hammer head nice and smooth with a belt sander or grinder. It should leave no sharp marks when striking the metal. My hammer was easy to dress and goes a long time between re dressings, is light and feels good in the hand. People may find the yellow handle offensive for a traditional blacksmith, but if you're a real smith, this tool is tops in performance.
