Product Description
The Cold Steel Kudu has a Krupp 4116 Stainless steel flat ground blade, heat treated to Rc 56-57 for better edge holding ability and ease of re-sharpening with a thin razor sharp edge. The handle of the Kudu is made of 43% glass reinforced Zytel, which has proven to be extremely strong. It is stiff enough to compliment the blade and spring when locked open. Plus, the gripping surface has a wood grain texture for traction and features an attractive polished steel Kudu horn emblem for a little extra flair!Kudu, Zytel Handle, Lock Release Ring, Plain Review
Over all, good, but not great. I like it, but won't carry it daily. In this review, I will forgo the caveats about sharp objects in the hands of not-so-sharp people, but consider yourself warned. What's right with it-
-Great materials; top notch steel and first rate synthetic for the handle.
-Interesting design; it is a modern rendition of a century (or more) old design called the "Okapi". The spring and lock mechanism are fully exposed, and the knife has only one screw an a pin (the screw replacing one of the pins in the original design) holding the whole thing together. I have a fondness for classical designs rendered in state of the art materials, and this fits the bill beautifully.
-Blade geometry; For the real routine uses of knives, opening mail and boxes, and cutting food, the blade is perfect.
-Handle geometry; one of the strongest points of both the original Okapi and the Kudu. The handle is gently curved, very comfortable, and fit the hand extremely well. The zytel is rough enough for a good grip without being unpleasant to hold. The inlaid steel logo is unobtrusive and tasteful (a stylized kudu, what else?)
-Fit and finish; meets or excedes what I have come to expect from Cold Steel. Lock is positive, blade moves smoothly without any play, all the polished surfaces are well polished, no molding marks or rough edges on the handle. Actually, the blade moves with a distinctive clicking (like the original), but it moves as smoothly as the design allows it to.
And the places that aren't so good-
-The lock; good enough for me, but not like the holding power of one of Cold Steel's liner locks.
-The lock; takes a little practice, and very strong fingers. It explains why more modern pocket knives are designed the way they are.
-The size; a few millimeters bigger than the original, and that is pretty darned big for day to day carry. A two thirds size one would be a distinct improvement.
Overall, I like it but don't love it. I'd like the 2/3 size better, but still wouldn't love it. It does, however, fit one of my tastes very well (for modern renditions of old designs), and that wins it a bunch of cool points with me.
