Columbia River Knife and Tool's 5570 H.U.G Razor Edge Knife and Money Clip Review

I've found that after owning and carrying this knife for over two years, that it's my hands-down favorite for every day carry (EDC). I have many other pocket clip-carry knives (Spyderco, Gerber, Benchmade, etc.), and this one tops them in usefulness, weight, and durability.

The wharncliffe blade is my favorite feature on this knife, and has become my favorite blade shape for EDC. It's extremely practical for every day use, and I've found the tip effective in scenarios ranging from digging a thorn out of a shoe, to using it as a toothpick in a pinch. While the factory edge is plenty sharp for most practical purposes, it doesn't come overly sharp. That being said, most knives of this caliber don't ,and of course it can be sharpened to your liking at any time, and it really holds an edge. I've cut rope, cardboard, and various other stuff that's notoriously hard on an edge, and it always comes away seemingly unaffected.

This knife excels in practicality, and I find it to be as good looking as it is well constructed. My only minor gripe is that when folded, the handle piece of the jimping that protrudes and hits the thumb-open button when closed can scrape your hand when your going into your pocket for something other than the knife. I carry in my left pocket, which rarely holds anything else, so it's a minor issue for me. That being said, once the knife is open, there is jimping on both the frame and the blade which come together to form a great platform to grip with your thumb. In my hands it's a 3.5 finger grip, with the base of the handle perfectly rounded to let my pinky get into the grip comfortably.

When I bought this, I had never even heard of Tactix. I have been spoiled my entire life with the likes of Craftsman, DeWalt, and Black & Decker. But, well, what's life without taking chances, right? Well, I took a chance on this and it paid off. I bought these because I had a lot of need for a ratchet set and not a lot of money to spend. They are rugged, and the ratchets are built very nicely; they do not rattle or feel flimsy like a lot of others, rather it feels like someone put some good, honest work into putting it together. The locks hold firm no matter the abuse I subject them to and it has a very smooth operation (as smooth as you can get when it comes to sockets). I also like the case it comes in; it's padded and rugged with aluminum latches, keeps all your sockets and wrenches water-free and organized. I definitely recommend this if you're looking for affordable quality.

I bought this grinder because I am setting up a small woodworking shop in a spare storage room in my apartment. And I do mean small, as in about 6'x5'. So I need everything to be small and relatively noise free. So I've decided to go with human powered tools exclusively. The reason that I'm mentioning all this is because commitment to human power is the only reason I would recommend this tool to somebody. Don't misunderstand, I gave the thing 4 stars as it works fine, but for the quality versus the price, you can buy a mini electric bench grinder for less money. So I would only recommend this to someone who wants to do traditional hand work and doesn't want to spend the time searching Ebay for a decent used crank grinder. That having been said, onto the review. Over all, I am pleased with this tool. When I said it seemed over priced, it just doesn't look like a $50-plus tool. I think $20-$30 would be more reasonable. The first task I used it for was to sharpen my 1/2" bench chisel, which was quite dull. The first thing I noticed was that as soon as I touched the chisel to the stone, it stopped spinning. I took the cover plate off and noticed the shaft wasn't set all the way into the gear. A few taps with a hammer solved the problem. After that, it ran very smooth. I had no trouble running my chisels, gouges, even my plane irons across the wheel and it put a fine edge on all of them (after some tuning with a wet stone). Over all, after I had it properly set up I was very pleased with it's performance. But again, I would only recommend this if you WANT a hand powered grinder, as there are plenty of electric models out there that don't take up much space and would work much better.
