COLUMBIA RIVER KNIFE and TOOL KNIFE, CENTOFANTE TRIBUTE 3.125" BColumbia River Knife And Tool's Tribute 6055 Razor Edge Knife Review
I don't understand why this knife doesn't get much higher ratings here, although 3 reviews is a small number indeed. I am a serious knife collector, with custom knives worth hundreds of dollars apiece in my collection. A gun and knife collector about 30 years my senior, told me to 'check it out'. As it turns out, I like this knife and its smaller sibling as well. The samples I've handled at knife shows and the one I own, are very well made. They tightly open, nice and crisp, stay safely open and close well. The canvas micarta scales (grips) border on being art. To me the lightness and lack of pocket clip only add to its appeal--in this case, "less is more". It is light enough to be comfy in your pocket, still sturdy and the materials are such that coins and keys have little effect on cosmetic appeal--it wears well.If you want to see a fine knife that's quite similar, but can easily cost 3,4 or even many times more--look at Al Mar knives--they're great knives. No, this is definitely no Al Mar, but it IS still very well constructed. It is made out of quality materials, including good steel on the blade. Unlike an Al Mar--I won't cry a river if it gets lost or if one of my sons 'borrows' it, although these probably won't be in production indefinitely. I prefer USA, European, Japanese and Taiwan made knives over Chinese, but CRKT has a good bunch making these knives in China, including good quality control inspection at the end. CRKT is fairly good overall but for me has been hit or miss with their assisted opening knives, including some designed by top notch knife designers--names like Carson and Crawford,--lovely knives that just weren't executed well enough in the manufacturing process and I felt compelled to return.
I typically buy assisted opening knives with removable clips and fixed blade knives, both types of many exotic steels (although I am going back to high carbon more and more), but this knife is a throw back to European style classics. I have some custom Japanese folders made of damascus steel that are sweet, but to peel a piece of fruit, for here and now, I really like this knife. It's a breeze to carry, a delight to manually open and close, it's pretty but still utilitarian and for about $30, I don't see much else out there that can touch it in this price category.
I have a Kershaw Rainbow Leek that is also pretty and twice + as expensive--it is somewhat similar, but much more modern in construction, has a slightly thinner blade and opens blazingly fast with a high tech 'assist', but it is also more inclined to sit on a desk in its lambskin lined soft case, while this Centofante Tribute knife is in my pocket! This however is again, a different animal--a manual folding knife, one that CRKT manufactures quite well, something similar in quality to what my grandfather probably would have brought over from Italy in the 1920's as an all purpose pocket knife. It just about screams, "let me peel an apple--let me do SOMETHING for you!" I say 'get it'--and with Amazon, you can't go wrong!
