Product Description

The Northern Industrial Plasma Cutter is a lightweight unit that features powerful inverter technology for smooth cutting. Handles almost any project you can throw at it, from mild steel to copper, brass, stainless and aluminum up to 3/8in. Cuts faster and more precise with a thinner kerf and less slag than cutting with oxy fuel. A smaller heat-affected zone also causes less warping. No gas pressure settings, flame tuning, metal preheating, or gas cylinders or refills to worry about, ever. Cutting Thickness (in.): 3/8 mild steel, 1/4 stainless steel and aluminum, 1/8 copper and brass, Volts: 230 AC, Amps: 15-40, Duty Cycle: 35% at 40 Amps, Pilot Arc: Yes, Plasma Gas Flow/Pressure: 4.5 CFM @ 60 PSI required, Clamp Cable Length (ft.): 10 ground cable/18 1/2 torch and torch cable, Power Cord (ft.): 6 1/2, Cart: No, Dimensions L x W x H (in.): 17 x 6 1/2 x 12 1/2

Northern Industrial Welders Plasma 375 230V Inverter-based Plasma Cutter - 40 Amp Output Review

This is my first plasma torch, so I can't compare this torch to other plasma units. I do have an oxyacetylene cutting torch so I am familiar with cutting metal.

One important point about plasma torch shopping - if you are considering one of the lesser known brands at a very attractive price, think about service after the sale. All of those "2nd tier" (my term) products typically require you to ship the unit back to their only location for service on your dime. I also read many reports about shipping damage and less than optimal fitting parts. If you aren't buying Miller, Lincoln, Hobart, ThermalDynamics, etc., then consider this Northern Tool model. They have stores everywhere and from what I've read, provide pretty good after-the-sale service.

Torch review:

Unit arrived in perfect condition and putting it together involved plugging in the leads on the front and screwing a male air fitting on the rear.

The unit cuts and cuts very well. After some practice I was making extremely clean cuts in all thicknesses up to 3/8" (the thickest stock I had on hand.) The manual is extremely vague about selecting amperage and air pressure - you just have to experiment.

In my learning process, I ruined a tip because I didn't have enough air pressure - lots of dross was being blown back into the tip :-( . The little instruction booklet recommends keeping air pressure at least 65 psi (as I recall) but 65 psi is only enough air for cutting thinner stock, thicker ( > 1/8" or so) material requires much more air. Now I run the air pressure at about 90 psi for just about all cutting.

The torch itself the very popular Trafimet S45 model and consumables can be found everywhere and are reasonably priced (and the cable is 18' long!) The ground cable is 10' long which I found to be an adequate length, the clamp I thought was a little on the small size but I suppose it is sized properly. If it bothers me enough, I'll replace it with a more substantial version.

Now for the issues I have with the unit:

My primary complaint is the *low* quality AC power cord. The cord jacket is apparently PVC and is *extremely* stiff in 50-65F temps AND the plug was only designed to PUSH in to the outlet and not PULL out - there is nothing to grab on the plug. My Hobart Ironman 230 MIG wire welder has a great *rubber* power cord (ALWAYS flexible) and the plug has recesses to make pulling it out fairly easy (BTW, the Ironman 230 is a great welder.)

My only other gripe (and a minor one) is the power switch at the rear top of the unit. I found it impossible to switch off or on with gloves on my hands, I always had to take a glove off to turn off the unit.

Final thoughts:

Totally pleased with my purchase - there's a *lot* of value for the money here. I will fix the cheapo AC cord problem by changing it out for a rubber-jacketed cord made in the USA.
