I was impressed with the intial quality, only to be disappointed. Threw one a couple times and put a ding in the blade. The leather wrapping on the handle was cheap-ish. I guess it hit at an odd angle, because the leather wrapping was cut. It looked like it sat on the shelf for a while, the rivets on the sheath were rusted a bit. Still, i plan on making the best of what i have... some cerakote and grip tape will improve them overall.

SMITH & WESSON CUTTIN' HORSE CH0025CP Review

i just got this knife about 15 mins. ago and upon first inspection, i was surprised how lite it feels in my hand. which could be a good or bad thing; depends on your point of view. the lack of weight would most likely be attributed to the plastic handle, which also bears a variation of a waffle grip, though it still feels like it has the potiential to slip when wet. i'm not sure if i like that or not to be honest. the dimensions on the description are pretty accurate. but for any lefties, like me, this is a right handed knife and the thumb assist cannot be switched to the other side but not really a big deal. one thing for sure is that this is definitely a one handed knife. the fold movement is easy and smooth; locks into place without any problems; folding the blade back in is almost effortless. the blade is fairly sharp out of the box, at it's thickest, the blade is almost 3/32 of an inch. while i'm not a huge fan of a drop point knife the fact that it also sports a tanto is what made me over look that detail. i was looking for a small, lite knife that was less than 5" when closed but not too small that it renders it unuseable; i got exactly what i wanted. i haven't put it through it's paces yet but i am pretty happy with my purchase.

update: i just noticed that the knife i bought is marked CH0025 but for some reason the review i gave took me to the same knife marked CH0026. not sure what the difference really is because i check both of them out and both seem to have the exact same description and dimensions; maybe it's not a model number???

CHIP QUIK® No Clean Flux in Squeeze tubes Review

The Chip Quik Solder Flux works fine, but it "burns" rather quickly. After a few seconds of applied heat, the flux seems to "scoot away" from the heat source and turn brown. Once it turns brown, it becomes very gummy and is difficult to remove either with hot soap and water OR denatured ethanol (ethyl alcohol).

I have also used Kester 2331-zx flux "thickened" by allowing the solvent to evaporate. The Kester flux works much better. It doesn't burn, and it washes off with hot water even if it's been heated "a lot".

The Chip Quik flux is "tacky" - the purpose being to hold an SMD part in place while it's being soldered. Unfortunately, the flux viscosity goes way down when it gets hot and it doesn't hold a part down. A small SMD part, heated on one side only, will "tombstone" (pop up vertically and solder to one end only).

The part needs to be held down while soldering to prevent this. Of course, this is inherent in all flux formulations... the Kester flux thins out when hot also.

So in summary, the Chip Quik flux works well, but not AS well as Kester 2331. It does smell better than Kester though! :)

Hitachi D13VG 9 Amp 1/2-Inch Drill Review

I purchased this Hitachi to replace a supposedly-heavy-duty 1/2" Craftsman drill that ground down to a halt in the middle of its infancy. (I was drilling sheetmetal for a seat bracket, nothing special, and it flat died. This was roughly the tenth time I had used the drill.) After asking some friends in the know and researching amp/torque levels online, I began looking for the Hitachi. By getting an Amazon C/C I ended up paying a hair over $100. I couldn't be happier. In the last month I have drilled fence brackets, sheetmetal and seat bracketing, and a few rubber bushings from their shells. Not a whimper came from this drill. I have one caution to offer: Use the side handle. Hitachi offers not just a screw-in handle but a steel extension to give the user more leverage against the drill. If this drill catches the material it is drilling, the force of the drill will cause one of three things will happen: The bit will break, the work will break, or you will have the opportunity to fight the torque of the drill (650 in-lb or so). Trust me, it will try to twist you around the work if you aren't prepared. This is no criticism. The drill is just that strong.

Two bonuses are its size and comfort. The notch on the back of the grip is perfect for using the free hand to steady the drill in lighter jobs, and the body of the drill is more compact than some lesser drills. For a drill with a 1/2" chuck it handles like some lightweight 3/8" models I tried. No need to switch to a smaller drill for lighter jobs due to comfort or size concerns. Sure, it's heavier than smaller drills, but that weight is an asset in steadying the work and fighting through any small catches of the bit in the work, the kind that are over before you realize anything snagged.

A word to the wise when shopping: There is a Hitachi with a similar part number (D13VF) that has a 9.0 amp rating but far less torque, somewhere around 460 in-lb. The price is similar. You give up torque for more bit speed. I needed the torque, hence my choice.
