Kershaw (KER1550ST) Ken Onion Serrated Edge Blackout Knife Review

I have had this knife for about 12 years now. The assisted opening is really smooth and the heft is perfect for my hand. When I first bought it I was a teenager and in my enthusiasm I used the assisted opening so incredibly many times that it broke. I sent it back to Kershaw and they fixed it lickety split without complaint. It has never failed since and that was over a decade ago. I'm not one of those guys who owns 8,000 knives so this is my mainstay. I have used this for all kinds of things and have not always been gentlemanly with it. I keep it sharp (I use a Lansky system), cleaned and lubricated (Kershaw rep told me the use Break Free lubricant) and it has always served me well.

I have one small complaint and it is that Kershaw thought it was smart to use a really odd fastener on the base of the knife. You can open it using a wide flathead screwdriver and a trimmed safety pin, but it is always annoying and could just as easily have been a screw. Also the pocket clip is for the right pocket only; there are no screw holes on the other side for leftys. That last bit doesn't bother me but it might bother you.

Powermatic 1352001 Model 3520B 20x35-Inch Wood Lathe with RPM Digital Readout Review

First off, let me say that if you're waiting for this lathe to be dropped off, invite a buddy or two over for beer, (after they've had a few, then break it to them that you 'may' need a hand lifting up some parts of this beast).

Actually the only stage I needed some serious help with was after both legs were screwed into the bed. Turning 4-500 lbs of cast iron upright by oneself is ill-advised. I used stacks of wood and some 2x stock as a lever, but I wouldn't recommend this approach...After that, re-installing the headstock, banjo, and tailstock was easy.

Next let me talk about customer service. I'd had a few parts broken on arrival, (the banjo and the 3" face plate). All it took was a phone call to customer service and they had these to my door in 3 days; awesome. Then it was on to technical support to ask about the proper way to hook this beast up to 220. They were helpful, knowledgeable and patient and walked me through the process. Thankfully I had a 30amp, (you only need 20 for the lathe), 3 prong dryer hookup nearby. I ended up making my own extension cord out of a 3 wire 10 gauge extension cord, clipped the ends, screwed a dryer plug onto one end and the other replaced the rat-tail that came with the lathe. It went together much easier than I thought it would, (especially considering that my electrician skills are less than stellar).

Back to the actual lathe review. This thing is 1. the most expensive piece of kit in my garage; 2. the heaviest...by far; and 3. the quietest power tool, it's quieter than a little hand sander, (until actually chunking away, that is)

All of the features that were added to this lathe work as advertised. It was obvious that a turner actually had a hand in putting this together. The wire guard is very easy to use, (which means it actually will get used, great safety feature). The tailstock is just cool; the storage bin underneath is a nifty space saver, and let's face it, the chrome hand wheel is just plain cool. I also like the auto release collet on the tailstock as well; whatever you have loaded i.e. live center/drive center, just back-up the tail stock and it self ejects.

On the headstock side, the brass tipped knock-out rod is well executed, works as advertised. Belt changing, (probably not something you'll do often anyway), is simple, straightforward, and takes 30 seconds to 1 minute. Not something you'll have to do everyday, as I don't know too many folks going from pen turning to 4' 80 lb burl turning in the course of a day. If this happens to be you, my hat is off to you, sir.

From what little I've turned so far, this lathe is just smooth. Maybe the beefy motor has something to do with it...maybe it's just the 700 lbs of cast iron, either way, I don't believe I'll ever outgrow this thing. This leads to why I purchased this fella in the first place. The 3520 is my first lathe. I firmly believe that if you do the research and then buy the best that you can afford, you'll only cry once, (OK maybe several times as the Visa statement gets mailed....) But as I've learned the hard way, the cheapest is rarely the best, and you'll most likely end up cursing like a sailor every time you use that 'bargain' piece of gear. I actually look at this purchase as saving money....instead of starting with a midi lathe, quickly outgrowing that and then working up to mid-range, and then maybe trading up a few years after that, I skipped those steps and saved that $, (yes this is what I tell my wife as well....she remains steadfastly unconvinced). Remember, you can turn small stuff on a big lathe, but not big stuff on a small lathe.

JH Williams WS-1168RCS 8-Piece Stubby Reversible Ratcheting Combination Wrench Set Review

Received my wrench set the other day, have yet to use them. They came in in a nice packaged container that can also double as an easily accessible/readable stowage rack. Beware, the package the wrench set came Reads Williams as they do in the picture, no where stating JH Williams,I asked my S-O rep today the affiliation between S-O and JH Williams. JH Williams and S-O are affiliated, Williams and S-O are not. The fine print on the back of the package reads Williams and Supertorque are a trademark of Snap-on Technologies, Inc. No statement of any kind of Warranty, and are made in Taiwan.

Like I stated earlier I have yet to use them; however they seemand feel like stout little wrenches that are every bit as smooth as a gear wrench, they are offset to clear objects/knuckles and are reversible. If not abused they should last along time. The reason I marked it a three is I feel there may be some misrepresentation/misleading in the add with the wording.

The price of the RO 125 EQ probably seems steep to you. After all, you could buy three random orbital sanders from PC or Bosch for the cost of one Festool unit. Let me give you some things to consider when comparing this sander to the competition.

All Festool corded tools have excellent dust collection. One reason Festool RO sanders excel is a tiny one: an extra hole in the center of the disk. This hole improves dust collection and prevents residue from building up in the center of the disk. Dust collection is almost total, and disks last longer. Because Festool disks are unique, you can't go to the budget market for your consumables. However, I've long felt that budget sanding products are inferior to top-of-the line brands. For first-class goods, Festool StickFix sanding disks are priced reasonably, although you should buy large packages to get the best value. Also, they are available in six varieties, suitable for everything from rust removal, to wood sanding, to finish sanding on plastic and paint. The Rubin disks work wonderfully on bare wood and for general use.

The RO 125 EQ is a variale-speed, dual-mode sander. The mode is selectable with a simple slide-switch. In rotary mode, the pad is directly gear-driven, enabling it to remove material like nobody's business. It's so agressive that in this mode, you'll be glad you can slow the sander down. In random-orbital mode, the action is gentle but effective, and it produces an exceptional finish. It's like owing two sanders. It's a bit on the heavy side, but it's easy to grip, so that it can be used two-handed on verticle surfaces. Thanks to weight and a well-balanced motor, it operates with very little vibration, so you're hands are less likely to tingle when you finish a long sanding session. That tingling is a bad thing, incidentally. Lots of woodworking pros have suffered long-term nerve damage from using tools that produce excessive vibration. While I have no test results to prove it, I think the RO 125 EQ will be less damaging in this regard.

I really like the removable pads. It's very easy to change from soft to hard pads or to change grits. While the hook-and-loop paper can be removed and re-applied, I prefer changing pads to peeling paper, especially if I'm changing abrasives often. It's faster, and, in my experience, the backing doesn't have as much grip after it's re-applied. By interchanging pads, I think I make my papers remain usable longer.

Corded Festools have a detachable cord that is interchangable between tools. (Some tools like the circular saws, which require a heavier cord, but the heavier one can be used on any of the tools.) I keep heavy-duty one cord out in my shop and switch it between tools. It's a lot easier than untangling cords for multiple tools. Morover, the cords are 13' long, which means I seldom need extension cords. If your cord is damaged, just order a new one. There's no need to send the tool to a repair shop.

Festools come in cases that you won't throw away. Systainers are stackable and latch together, so it's easy to carry multiple tools to a job site. This case contains compartments for sanding disks. An auxiliary Systainer, the SYS-STF D 125 is organized for storing many more 5-inch disks. The Festool storage system is versatile enough that an entire shop could be organized around it.

If you buy a Festool, invest in a good, tool-controlled shop vacuum. I've had good success with my Fein Turbo II shop vacuum. If you're flush with cash, I'm sure the Festool dust collectors are worth the money, but my Fein works, well, fine, and the Fein is a wet-dry shop vacuum, while the Festools are strictly for dry use. Be sure to buy a hose adapter with the sander, which won't attach directly to anything. The Festool D27 DM-AS adapter will work with most 1 1/4" vacuum hoses, and that's what I currently use with my Fein vacuum. Alternatively, Fein makes a multi-step rubber adapter that I've also used successfully. Because both the power and dust connections are at the tool, it's very easy to change between tools that are connected to your dust collector.

Like all my Festools, I expect my RO 125 EQ to last longer than I want it too. When the next model comes out, I won't be able to use a worn out tool as an excuse to upgrade. Eventually, I won't have the latest and greatest. But I still expect to be satisfied.

If versatility, effective dust-collection, and durability are important to you, you won't regret buying one of these. If you do, Festool gives you 30 days to try and return it. I don't think you'll be spending the return postage, though.
