Solder It PRO-70K Complete Kit With Pro-70 Tool Review

As an electronics professional with nearly 40 years of experience, I have owned many portable soldering systems, both butane and battery powered. Based on my experience, I would rate the Solder It PRO-70 as one of the best, especially considering it reasonable price. You can buy more expensive units with a couple of extra features, but dollar for dollar, it's hard to beat the value and performance of the PRO-70.

First off, the PRO-70 is well designed and easy to use. It lights easily using the supplied "sparker" or an external flame. This iron doesn't have a built in piezoelectric starter, but considering their temperamental nature, this is probably an advantage. It heats quickly and is continuously adjustable over a wide range of temperatures. The grip is comfortable and remains reasonably cool even after extended use. The tips are threaded and screw off and on easily, making it a simple matter to change tips. Solder-It also offers a large assortment of optional soldering tips, including a heat shrink attachment, blow torch and hot knife, making the PRO-70 suitable for a variety of jobs. Finally, the PRO-70's slender design makes it easy to work in tight spaces.

The fact that it is butane fueled is both economical and convenient. The PRO-70 will run for approximately 2 hours on a tank of fuel and a single 10 ounce can of butane will provide enough fuel for approximately 30 hours of operation. That works out to around 15 cents per hour, compared to over $3 per hour for similar battery powered units.

The one complaint I have, and the only reason I didn't give this review 5 stars, is in the design of the on/off temperature control button, which is constructed from a small piece of formed steel with incredibly sharp edges. If you're not careful, it's easy to cut your fingertip. We're not talking major injury here, more like a minor paper cut, but very annoying nonetheless. I was able to improve the situation slightly by filing down the edges of the button with a small jeweler's file, but it's still not perfect. This really needs to be redesigned. Other than this one problem, it appears to be well constructed and given average care, it should provide many years of reliable service.

Kissing Crane Black Bowie Knife Review

It is an excellent reproduction of a Sheffield English style bowie from the 1840-1850's. It's a big extremely well made knife. The quality is much better than you would expect for $60. There are no gaps in the blade/guard or the handle slab/tang joins. It is similar to the CAS-Hanwei bowie repro's but the blade stock is thicker than the Hanwei bowies that I own. It looks like the Hanwei Bell bowie but at about half the price. It is not on the level of a hand made custom bowie but it doesn't cost a couple of thousand dollars either. Compared to other mass manufactured brands, such as Case, Boker etc, this knife ranks with the best of them. I have noted that the quality of knives from China has increased amazingly in the last few years.

The sheath is a standard style brown leather with basketweave design. It has a keeper strap that goes over the top quillon of the guard. Unlike the knife it is not period correct. Since the knife is a wall hanger, this probably will not matter to most people.

If I had to list a CON, I would say that the handle is a bit too heavy - the tang should have been tapered or drilled to lighten the weight. But since this is a display knife not a user, that really doesn't matter.

PORTER-CABLE FR350MAG Round Head 2 3/8-Inch to 3-1/2-Inch Round Head Framing Nailer with Magnesium Housing Review

Purchased the new FR350MAG because I wanted a full round head nailer (they hold better, esp on outdoor projects), and wanted enough power for full 16penny common nails. I have only framed out my basement since I got it, but so far love the nailer. Is an improvement over the FR350 (lighter, more power, easier to clear jams, and can shoot bigger nails), but identical in physical size. Pluses: Light, good balance, comfortable to use, powerful, easy jam clearing, very easyloading magazine, good toe-nailing, good price for product.Minuses: Double-fires often with standard trigger (as most nailers do). Called them and they sent restrictive fire trigger (free). Large size makes nailing in joist space, etc, difficult. Can't hold as many nails in the magazine as a clipped-head nailer (duh). Overall a great nailer. Have used lots of framing nailers, and this is my favorite so far. Not sure about durability, since I do not frame houses for a living (though i've done a couple). Will update this review as I use this nailer more (a big shed project scheduled for spring!).
