SHOP FOX W1752 Mini Wood Lathe Review

well i bought this lathe as an entry level machine and i am not convinced that it is a good buy for a beginner. The machine arrived mostly intact with the only damage being to the top platic belt cover, it was missing a small chunk out of it right on top, i covered it with duct tape to help protect the belt and gears from wood and other debris. The first thing i did was check to make sure all the parts were present ( they were) and then set the lathe up and turned it on, it ran fine. after that i checked to see if the tail stock was in line with the headstock, it wasnt and there were no lateral adjusting screws, the vertical allignment was acceptable (off by just a hair) and after i checked the gap between the ways and the allignment posts on the tailstock i found that there was a .015" differance between the two. i solved this problem with some .005" shim stock that i bent arount the alignment posts, after that the fit was very snug and the tailstock lined up close enough. As far as opperation goes the lathe perfoms acceptably, i have no trouble with excessive vibration or loss of power. As far as general design, the machine was obviously made in china (stickers all over it) and the quality of work was not that great, the major beef i have with design is that the motor guard only covers the front side and front top half of the motor, meaning that shavings end up sitting right on top of the motor, i stop from time to time and blow the chips away from the motor. The belt seems to be starting to fray already, as this is a consumable part of the machine i am not overly concerned and plan of buying a new one right away incase i need it. all in all i would say that this is an acceptable lathe for the price, but if you are a begginer who has no knowlege of lathes at all ( i work as a machinist) i would reccomend either buying a more user friendly lathe, or enlisting the knowlege of someone with more experiance with lathes.

Chicago Pneumatic CP77332 1/2-Inch Heavy Duty Impact Wrench with 2-Inch Extended Anvil Review

While looking at impact wrenches, several people told me that they would work with a small compressor and several told me that they would not.
I purchased the Chicago Pneumatic CP7733-2 impact wrench and it worked fine with my Porter Cable Job Boss Mod. C3551 Air Compressor which has a 4.5 gallon tank and is rated 4.4SCFM @ 90PSI (max pressure 150psi). I set the compressor at 90psi (recommended for the impact wrench) and was able to remove all the wheels from my truck. I did have a problem with one lug after removing the other 5 from that wheel, but found that the wheel was in a bind. Once I jacked the tire up completely off the ground, the lug came off with ease. I then changed wheels on my dad's vehicle and it worked very nicely. It seemed to have plenty of power.
A CP Rep that I spoke with said this was a good entry level impact wrench. At one of the local tire shops I was at recently, it looked like they were using the same model impact wrench. I use mine for home use however.
During testing that I did with the impact wrench and my compressor, I found that when tank pressure was full at 150PSI, the impact wrench would hammer for approx. 20 seconds or so before the air pressure would drop enough that the compressor would need to pump up. In general, I found it necessary to let the compressor pump back up after every 4 or 5 lugs that I removed. A big compressor would be nice, but for home use you just have to stop and let a smaller compressor pump up once in a while.
One concern I have is making the lugs too tight. I had the impact wrench set on #4. After each lug was on, I hit each one again real quick. I then checked the lugs with a hand wrench and was unable to tighten them any more. I may purchase a torque wrench to go with this so I don't over tighten particularly on alloy wheels. I don't think this particular wrench is powerful enough to twist a lug bolt off, but I wouldn't recommend letting the impact wrench hammer away when tightening them.

DEWALT DC830KA 14.4-Volt 1/2-Inch Compact Impact Wrench Review

I have a whole bunch of DeWalt 14.4V tools, and at my advanced age, have been reluctant to make the switch for all my tools (and batteries!) to slightly better performing, higher voltage products. I had a Royabi 18V impact wrench--which I got in a "way-cheap" Home Depot package deal--that "walked off" one of my project sites, and I had grown very fond of using it on my projects--especially driving deck and lag screws.

I was pleased to find this DeWalt at an affordable price (apparently the orphaned voltage has some advantages!), and the product is superb--even better than the Royabi in virtually every way. I was happy to have the package include a 3/8" adapter for the 1/2" native drive, as I don't have very many 1/2" socket drive tools in "woodworking" sizes.

I have owned this drill for many years and it still works like new. In the age of 18v and greater cordless power, people are forgetting what a great drill this is - at about half the weight of its big brothers. Although I am not a contractor using my drill all day every day, it has seen hard use. I have used it exclusively to renovate two houses (including drywall hanging), build a 24x45 pole barn, and countless woodworking and home repair projects. I recently used this tool to staple a screen mesh under the eaves of my house. When shooting staples downward, it worked fine. However, it did have significant problems when used to shoot staples upward as the staples tended to fall down in the holder and they would not always advance or they would often cause the stapler to jam. One jam ultimately completely froze up the tool and I had to return it. Also, the design of the staple holder could be better. It was very difficult to close at times and often became stuck open requiring disassembly of this portion of the tool. I attribute most of these problems to shooting staples upward however.If you will use the stapler often, I would go for the higher quality/cost model. Grizzly SBW-1401AG Bandsaw, 14-Inch, 0.75-HP Review

If woodworking is just a hobby, then this bandsaw is a great choice. I'm sure that "for a few hundred dollars more", bandsaw 'X' is much better. However, a lot of people do not have a few hundred dollars more to spend. Fact is, the bandsaw did not even flinch at resawing 5" thick oak and did so reasonably accurately.

After a month of usage, here are a couple observations. First, plan on spending a few hours assembling and adjusting the bandsaw. The better the job setting it up, the better it will work for you. I found the assembly instructions to be a little unclear in a few places and there were a few screws and nuts left over. For the life of me, I cannot figure out where the 'spare' parts are suppose to go.

Also, you will want to purchase a 93 1/2" blade right away (a 3/8" 6 TPI blade seems like a good general purpose blade). Do not bother taking the time to install and adjust the blade that comes with the saw. Seriously, that blade will make you sad. And then you will end up redoing the work when you install a 'good' blade.

The fence that comes with the bandsaw is OK, but you will have much better results resawing if you make your own resaw fence.

The only complaint that comes to mind is that the saw seems to have a zillion orifices for saw dust to leak out of. Even if the bandsaw is the only thing connected to the dust collector, there is still sawdust all around the machine.

One important thing to note is that the bandsaw ships via freight. If you are not familiar with dealing with freight companies, then keep in mind that they ain't UPS. They have their own way of doing things, so just go with the flow. After you place your order, Grizzly will send you an email explaining how delivery works. The important thing to note is that you are responsible for getting the bandsaw off the truck. It is a two (or three) person job and do not count on the driver helping. You MUST reply back to this email before Grizzly will release your order. I was told that for an additional $40 (on top of the $74 shipping), the freight company can make the delivery using a lift-gate truck and the driver will unload the saw for you. I chose to get the saw off the truck myself.

Once your order ships, keep an eye on the tracking. The freight company should call you to schedule a delivery with in a day or two of the saw arriving 'in town'. If they do not call you, call them yourself to schedule the delivery. I was told that the bandsaw should be delivered on a regular truck between 9:00 and 5:00 and that the driver would call an hour before arrival. What actually happened was that the driver did not call and showed up at 5:15 with a liftgate truck. Since I asked nicely, the driver unloaded the saw and dropped it off in my garage. My experience with freight companies has shown this to be not all that unusual.

To summarize: I am very happy with the saw and, like other Grizzly products, I expect that this saw will last a lifetime.
