I was looking for a good assisted opening knife to replace the one I have had for more than 10 years. I came across this special ops knife from Smith and Wesson. I wanted an assisted knife that would open like it was an automatic. I also wanted a knife that would have very little play on the blade and just feel good in the hands and be solid and durable. I wasn't sure I would be getting all of that for the price, but I was definitely not disappointed!

This is bigger than what it looks like in the picture. When I first got it, I noticed it definitely has weight to it. It is a little thick, about a half an inch, but it is also very solid. I can tell this is going to last a very long time. When you open it, it opens so fast you can hardly see it with your eyes. It snaps into place in the blade is locked very tight. I would definitely make this purchase it again. In fact, I'm looking at some of their other knives as well…

Grizzly MC254 Cast Iron Bench Top Wood Lathe, 10-Inch Review

If you're interested in a "training lathe" and want to learn as you go, this is the right machine. It is managebale and forgiving for a beginner. The speeds are relatively easy to set and the lathe is quiet and steady. However, once you get past your "gee I want to turn bowls" stage, the lathe will not be enough. The tool rest is short and achieving depth in bowls can be difficult and hazardous. If you change out the tool rest ( it's compatible with Delta) the increased length, as least for me, caused metal fatigue on the tool rest base and a crack. Thank goodness that replacment parts are cheap and the techies at Grizzly are very helpful ( as is customer service). I have replaced the tool rest base, the belt, the live center and the face plate it came with. All in all, this is a great, affordable place to start learning the ins and outs of a wood lathe.

This is originally the knife I wanted but the seller shipped the longer version of the knife to me. Also the knife lock doesn't lock correctly, the blade was loose when I got it, so i tightened it up but eventually it got loose again. So overall I would probably not buy this knife again, or recamend it.

Combination Miter Square Review

I have been using this type and brand of square since 1977. They are as accurate as machinist's squares, +/- .0002 (two TEN-thousandths) per six inches.

So long as you don't abuse or drop them, all steel construction guarantees they will stay accurate for a century or two.

The size is convenient for small tool-boxes and belts.
The foot-plate allows it to stand on it's own which makes many common alignment procedures much easier, just like good machinist's squares.
The foot-plate also "registers" to any surface perfectly square on BOTH sides, which makes marking 90 or 45 degree cuts a snap. The shape, with it's trapezoidal holes makes it easy-to-hold and place. It's heft helps it stay in place. I find that steel squares are more useful than aluminum "speed-squares" or the plastic equivalent for certain shop operations and set-ups that require a magnet to hold the square in position.

Some people are confused by the marking system on these. Strangely, even the Woodcraft website mistakenly claims these are marked in "16th inch graduation." It's no surprise then that one reviewer was disappointed when he found they were not. This square, and others by Shinwa, use the Japanese "sun" markings. The SUN system of marking is unique to Japanese master-craftsmen which they use in their beautiful complex joinery. It is neither Metric nor Imperial. That is no problem if you just want the SQUARE, but don't need a measuring device.

BTW... If you are thinking about learning japanese joinery, you NEED squares with the sun system. When you read the Japanese joinery books, many times old-masters only give dimensions in "sun." It is a real hassle trying to convert that to Imperial or metric, especially on angle-cuts. The SUN system of marking automatically compensates for certain angles, thereby eliminating the need for trigonometry. If you wonder why the markings on the angled-side line up perfectly with the straight side, that's why.

I have an antique Starrett square ( inherited from my father, a pattern-maker) and a new Starrett, plus machinist's squares from Germany and Japan. They all agree with this square with ZERO deviation.

That's just awesome for a $20 dollar tool!

Over the decades, many fellow woodworkers and tradesmen have commented on my "funny-looking square." Quite a few end up buying one after trying mine. Because these are so useful, accurate and inexpensive, I have often bought these as presents for fellow crafts-people. As a result of all that, I have seen and tested forty or fifty of these over the years. Without fail, every one of them was dead-square. All of them have nicely machined and finished edges; never a bad one in over four decades.

So long as you're OK with the unusual SUN marking-system, this square is Highly recommended.

South Bend Lathe SB1002 10K - 10-Inch by 28-Inch Bench Lathe Review

The South Bend lathes, for a century, and particularly the 9" models have been such a successful design that copies of it have been made all over the world. I have owned and run a 9" South Bend Mod A lathe for twenty years. I needed larger swing capacity for more products.
Like most people, of course I had a budget.
this is not a SB Fanboy rave. Because it was not made in South Bend, I approached it with suspicion and apprehension, especially seeing certain budget lathes in a local showroom (And getting asked to leave).

OK, Cosmoline Cleaning observations:
This is a South Bend. Users of the 9's, the Heavy 10's, and the 10K's will automatically reach for the feed clutch, change box, feed direction levers, by instinct.
A Meehanite casting with hardened bedways. Saddle and compound ways are scraped, the bedway V's are "Precision ground". We'll see about that when critical parts are made.
Tomorrow it will be leveled, bolted, and the Breakin procedure for the gears and bearings will be run.
Now, remembering I have seen new machinery come into my employer's shops for many decades, and not just because it's my new lathe, what's the Form, Fit and Finish?
It's beautiful.

Normally, when I buy a tool, I'll tell it, "OK. I paid for you, and you are going to WORK like a rented mule!".

This is the first time I ever bought a tool where I thought, "Am I good enough to deserve this?"

I could have paid $2,000 less for a 10" lathe. There are some on here, and many on the web. Read the metalworking forums and newsgroups, and do your homework. Your needs may be different from mine. If budget is really an issue, there are plenty of used machines, around, also.

Next Day:

How does it run? OK I have the nuisance of changing all my chucks and tooling over to the D1-3 Camlock system. Not really a big deal, and it is a better mounting system than the usual 1 1/2-8 screw-on. Now, cutting in reverse with a rear mounted tool will not unscrew the chuck.
There is no conventional back gear, but the poly-V drive has a wide range of reductions. The chuck as supplied had no detectable runout with a Mitutoyo dial indicator.
It comes with a quad tool holder. Nice, but a nuisance to shim all the heights. I am moving my Aloris post over to it, anyway. The spindle has precision tapered roller bearings. No more end float, and perfect large facing finishes now.

Whines:
1) Does not come with tailstock chuck.
2) Ball oiler was missing on feedscrew bearing. $2. All the earlier SBs had a little open hole, anyway, but...
3) Humungous, Monster cast iron motor the size of a watermelon, that hums. Physically huge and heavy for a measly One Horsepower. Why? Ballast?

EDIT: 2 Weeks Later: Operating experience.

Crossfeed backlash: Less than 0.0026 measured by DRO. Typical max spec is 0.005. Adjustable to ZERO but not recommended by Mfr. I believe it is a ball nut.
OEM Chuck test: Turn, flip, rechuck, turn. Better than 0.0005 TIR.(!) That doesn't happen often! Never, to my memory.
FACING LARGE FLAT. 8" Diameter: Less than 0.0015 Plane/Parallel both sides. Flatness Slightly better than 0.001 center to edge.
LONGITUDINAL TAPER TEST: Required headstock truing. Now ~0.0003/Foot, and I know I can get it better. Jacking screws on Headstock mount make it easy, if not a little tedious.
Heavy, heavy headstock probably shifted in rough transit.

Delivery: Pilot. Prompt, friendly, offered to help. Manly pride and excitement got it the way, and I had a travel crane anyway.
This thing is HEAVY. Be safe when moving and installing. It is top heavy, and you will need equipment, or the better part of the local biker gang.
The unit comes fully crated. You will need a neighbor with a fireplace or woodstove to get rid of it all.

Price: Research the prices of old lathes..even junk ones found in a barn. This is not an expensive lathe. The extra money spent on this will be forgotten when you run it out of the box versus restoring an old junker like I did, or settling for some strange brand that has not-very-good reviews online.
